“Love or knowledge, which would you choose?”
1896. Girton College, Cambridge. The Girton girls study hard and match their male peers grade for grade. Yet, while the men graduate, the women leave with nothing but the stigma of being a “blue stocking”, an unnatural, educated woman. They are determined to win the right to a degree but there are many hurdles in their way. “Blue Stockings”, by Jessica Swale, of “Nell Gwynn” fame, follows them over one tumultuous year, showing the excitement of a new movement in education and the dilemmas it threw up.
Come and read this play, full of wit and a touch of righteous indignation, at The Mill, Liphook Road, Shottermill, Haslemere, Surrey GU27 3QE at 5:30 pm on Sunday 4 August.
