Hurrah! Another play reading is coming.

Haslemere Thespians’ next play reading on Sunday June 1 is The Lady in the Van by Alan Bennett.

It is said that charity begins at home. For Alan Bennett, it began at the bottom of his drive with a custard yellow van inhabited by an irascible eccentric who refused to budge. First performed in 1999, and transferred to the screen in 2015, Bennett’s play tells the funny and touching true (mostly) story of Miss Mary Shepherd, who took refuge with her van in his garden originally for three months, but ended up staying fifteen years. The story centres on their extraordinary relationship, which for Bennett was a source of intrigue, frustration and compassion.

Come to the Mill Tavern at 5.30pm on Sunday, 1 June, to enjoy this funny and touching play.
