Countdown to The King's Speech: The Duchess of York

Royalty rules again in today's character profile as we continue our build up to The King's Speech.

As we all know, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother was the mother of Queen Elizabeth II, grandmother of King Charles III and the widow of King George VI. But did you know she was born the Honourable Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon on 4 August 1900, the fourth daughter of Lord Glamis, later 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and spent her early childhood at St Paul's Waldenbury in Hertfordshire, the country home of her parents?

The Bowes-Lyon family is descended from the Royal House of Scotland with Elizabeth's 14th century ancestor, Sir John Lyon, becoming Thane of Glamis at the family seat Glamis Castle which some 300 years previously had been home to one of Elizabeth's most illustrious relations as she reveals during the course of the play.

Elizabeth will be played by our second debutant, Fiona Cullis. who has previously appeared in local productions of Oliver!, Trial by Jury, The Beggar's Opera and The Sound of Music. We are delighted to have Fiona on board and hope this is the first of many appearances with us.

You can see The King’s Speech at Haslemere Hall at 7:30 pm on Thursday 16, Friday 17 and Saturday 18 May. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 01428 642161 or follow the link https://tickets.haslemerehall.co.uk/sales/genres/theatre/the-kings-speech
