Play readings 2024

Updated: Jan 21

We are delighted to announce series of play readings through 2024. Some might be candidates for future productions, others not. We hope each of them will give us an enjoyable evening, which is the main purpose. You can enjoy reading a good play and also help to choose productions for 2025. David Greenwood will host these evenings (except April - Adam Forde) which will be held in the Snug at The Mill, Liphook Road, Shottermill, Haslemere, Surrey GU27 3QE starting at 6:00 pm.

For your diaries, the proposed programme is as follows:

Sunday February 4th. Shakespeare in Love. Theatre adaptation of the film, which all of us will have seen and enjoyed. We hope a reading of this brilliant script will kick things off well.

Sunday April 7th. The Visit. This is a superb play, written in 1956 by Swiss playwright Friedrich Durrenmatt. It is dark in its themes but there is a lot of humour as well and a good variety of parts, large and small.

Sunday June 9th. Time and the Conways. From 1939, a brilliant play by J.B.Priestley, once a highly successful playwright, whose work now seems out of favour (excepting “An Inspector Calls”), and is due a revival.

Sunday August 4th. Blue Stockings. By Jessica Swale of Nell Gwynn fame. First performed at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2013, the play is set at Girton College, Cambridge in 1896 and involves four very talented female undergraduates and their battle for recognition.

Sunday October 6th. Jack Absolute Flies Again. This is a free adaptation of Sheridan’s great play “The Rivals”, updated to a Battle of Britain airfield in 1940, complete with famous characters like Mrs.Malaprop, Lydia Languish and Bob Acres.

Monday December 9th. The Unfriend. By Stephen Moffat of Doctor Who and Sherlock fame. This first appeared in Chichester in 2022 and is currently playing to packed houses in the West End.

Make sure to check back here for updates throughout the year.
