April play reading information

Sunday April 7th. The Visit (or The Old Lady Comes To Call).

This is a superb play, written in 1956 by Swiss playwright Friedrich Durrenmatt. It is dark in its themes but there is a lot of humour as well and a good variety of parts, large and small. In this tragicomedy, a multimillionaire visits her hometown after an absence of many years and offers the residents great wealth if they will kill one of their leading citizens who had betrayed her many years before. In this morality play about vengeance and greed, is the prospect of wealth enough to corrupt the townspeople into agreeing to murder?

The play was revived at the National Theatre in 2020 with Lesley Manville in the main role and also featured Hugo Weaving. Our play readings are always fun and open to all so you are welcome to join us in The Garden Room at The Mill, Liphook Road, Shottermill, Haslemere, Surrey GU27 3QE at 5:30 pm.
